Currently, there are various types of lighting fixture in the industry which makes our environment look and feel more comfortable. Using the right lighting fixtures can creates a safe environment besides adding style to the interior décor.
Ceiling light/pendant light
Ceiling lights are fixed on the ceiling while pendant lights hang from the ceiling. Both types of light provide luminance and are usually used indoors for ambient lighting. It is normal to see pendant lights installed in most living rooms and dining areas.
Wall light
This type of light is installed on vertical walls and usually has small wattage to avoid creating glare from human eyes. Wall lights can be installed on a corridor or the corner of a staircase to create an accent lighting. Other than that, wall lights can also act as decorative lighting as it has a lot of different designs in the market.
Stand lamp/floor lamp
Stand lamps, sometimes also known as floor lamps, each have a base or scaffold to support the lamp to stand on the ground. A stand lamp can create an ambience as well as accent, depending on the type of stand lamp used.
Step light
Step lights are installed along corridors or on staircases. Their function is to provide a safe guide to users while they walk through corridors, or up or down stairs during the night or in a dark environment.
Table lamp/desk lamp
Table lamps and desk lamps are smaller in size compare to stand lamps. However, there is a minor difference between table lamps and desk lamps. A table lamp can act as a decorative light and is usually used for armchair reading or bedside reading. It is usually just to add more light to the room. A desk lamp on the other hand, has a more definite function as it acts as a task lighting. It is frequently used on the study table or working area to provide a strong light source to its user.
Sensor light
The most common types of sensor lights that can be found in the market are motion sensors and infrared sensors. A sensor light will only illuminate once it is triggered when there is motion detected. It is usually installed in the outdoor of a building or garage to prevent theft as well as burglary.
Structured lighting (under-cabinet/cove/closet)
Structured lighting is made up of the combination of a light source and the structure of the building such as the wall or ceiling. Occasionally, it can also be installed under a cabinet or in the closet. Structured lighting uses indirect lighting to provide ambience to the room or a specific area. Some examples of structured lighting include cove lighting, under-cabinet lighting and closet lighting.
Spot light/track light
Spot lights and track lights are project intense beam of light directly onto a place, item or person. The function of a spot light and track light is to focus the attention of users on a specific product or area. For example, beautiful art pieces on the wall or some valuable collections on the shelves.
Wall washer
Wall washers are popularly used to illuminate large surfaces to create layering effect. The common installation of wall washer is on the billboard or an exterior of a building. Nowadays, some interior designers also use wall washers to create various atmosphere.
Recessed light/downlight
Recessed lights or downlights are lighting fixtures that are installed into hollow openings in the ceiling and illuminate directly downward. Users need to consider some factors before installing them. Users need to choose recessed lights or downlights that match the space available as well as the dissipation of heat created by the lights.
